Berlin and the Lady with an Ermine (aka Berlin Season 2) has officially touched down on Netflix globally today. This highly anticipated second installment marks the definitive farewell to the iconic Andrés de Fonollosa (Pedro Alonso), Netflix has made one thing abundantly clear: the world of Money Heist (La Casa de Papel) is far from over.
If you’ve already binged your way through the Sevilla-based heist, you’re probably wondering where the franchise goes from here. Berlin season 2 had a rather explosive ending, but didn’t really provide too many hints as to where we’re headed next. What has Netflix officially announced so far, and more importantly, what have the creators Álex Pina and Esther Martínez Lobato said about what they’re planning next?
Where Does Money Heist Go Next? Season 6?
Let’s quickly go back to that original announcement.
During the promotional campaign, which has been vast throughout Spain, Netflix used the show’s launch to confirm that the franchise will continue. The announcement came on May 9th, when Netflix hosted an epic overnight takeover of the Guadalquivir River in Seville for 4,000 fans and 700 VIPs, crowned by a show-stopping performance by Rosalía. Thousands of fans watched as a boat full of people dressed in the iconic red jumpsuits and Salvador Dalí masks sailed down the river to the rhythm of Bella Ciao.
During the event, Netflix dropped a brand-new teaser and promotional images with a clear message: “WHAT COMES NEXT HAS ALREADY BEGUN.”
Netflix officially stated, “The stories of Money Heist do not end with Berlin and the Lady with an Ermine,” confirming that the universe is actively expanding. But what exactly does that mean? So far, we’ve come up short, although the prevailing thought, as we put in our initial write-up, is that it’ll be a direct continuation of the Money Heist series, given that the teaser ends with gold bars being dug up.
Two days after this initial announcement, we received another cryptic teaser from Netflix and the official La Casa De Papel YouTube channel, featuring footage from that event on May 9th. The video ended with Álvaro Morte removing his Dalí mask among the crowd, and came with the caption: “Every dream and every ship needs a captain: Álvaro Morte leads our crew of red jumpsuits and Dalí masks to announce that the Money Heist universe lives on.”
Given this video and a tweet from Netflix India saying the Professor is back, it very much implies that our next adventure will be with Álvaro Morte, although, once again, no exact details on what the return will entail, and no mention of season 6. Fans are widely speculating online whether we might see a proper Season 6 featuring The Professor assembling an entirely new crew for a fresh international target.
A Colonel Tamayo Spin-off titled ‘Buscametales’?
According to reports circulating among Spanish outlets, Álex Pina’s production company is already developing a four-episode miniseries focused on the ruthless and fan-favorite antagonist, Colonel Tamayo (played by Fernando Cayo).
Tentatively titled Buscametales (Metal Seekers), the police-focused spin-off would be a massive shift in perspective, following Inspector Tamayo as he tries to track down the missing gold from the Bank of Spain heist. Rumors suggest Álvaro Morte may even make an appearance in this spin-off, tying the two massive announcements together.
Will there be a Berlin season 3?

The second season of Berlin goes out with a massive bang. Berlin and his crew successfully orchestrate a masterclass in deception against Alvaro Hermoso de Medina, the Duke of Málaga.
The gang manages to brave a terrifying, fire-ringed underground safe (kudos to Bruce and Roi for holding out in the flames) to walk away with a cool $75 million. But the true genius of the finale lies in the art heist. Instead of fencing Alvaro’s hidden collection of stolen masterpieces, Berlin takes the high road. Following a brilliant cameo (labeled as a special appearance in the credits) and word of caution from his brother, The Professor (Sergio), Berlin decides to dismantle Alvaro’s life by anonymously returning masterworks like Caravaggio’s The Nativity to their rightful museums. He leaves the Duke with only The Lady with an Ermine—a piece that is ironically later sold off to the Polish government for €100 million.
The finale wraps up several character arcs, though not all of them happily:
- In the show’s most devastating twist, Cameron is left to die in freezing waters after a yacht incident orchestrated by Alvaro’s men. She valiantly sacrifices herself to protect the rest of her “family,” leaving a heartbreaking final voice note for Roi confessing that he is the love of her life.
- Damian finally gets the girl, revealing his true identity as a quantum physics professor to Genoveva, who leaves her husband. Meanwhile, Alvaro’s bodyguard, Samuel, lets the entire heist happen out of unrequited love for his boss—and the two end up together after Alvaro loses everything.
- The season ends with a mid-credit sequence on a bittersweet, celebratory note, as Berlin marries Candela, surrounded by his surviving crew.

While many of the characters discuss another job coming down the line in Marbella, Netflix has seemingly ruled out any future Berlin entries. In a recent press release sent from the United States team, they wrote at the bottom: “BERLIN AND THE LADY WITH AN ERMINE marks the final chapter in Berlin’s story, giving one of the MONEY HEIST universe’s most iconic characters a definitive farewell.”
That decision, according to the show’s creators (before the Money Heist continuation was announced), was entirely down to Pedro Alonso. According to a behind-the-scenes report by El Diario, Alonso called a meeting with the creators just two months ago to drop the bomb that he wanted to leave the character he’s played for almost ten years behind.
Álex Pina said of Alonso’s departure (translated from Spanish): “We met for coffee one day and he told us. It was a surprise. We love writing this character because of the ability he has to pass from one genre to another, from darkness to light, to comedy and light. That, for a writer, is wonderful. So it makes me very sad that this journey with Berlin is ending, but I think it was also necessary to finish in order to open others.”
Pina respected the decision, adding: “In the end, the one who carries the weight and embodies him is Pedro, and I understand that there is a moment when he wants to step out of the character. He explained it to us very well. There is a moment when you have to shed that skin, that soul, and I understood it, so we weren’t very pushy either.”
Esther Martínez Lobato said they had plenty more plans for the character, saying, “Especially because we have many pending stories left. We have a document with many ideas that have come up over time. We had many adventures in many places around the world and with many women, because it was about interweaving the robberies and that extreme character with romantic stories. I asked him: Wouldn’t you like to see Berlin here or there? Because I can think of a thousand stories to frame him in.”
Could Money Heist head internationally (again)?
You may remember we’ve already had an expansion to the Money Heist world in the form of Money Heist: Korea: Joint Economic Area, which ran for a single season before quietly being canceled behind the scenes, but was mostly criticized for being a 1:1 retelling rather than a true expansion of the world.
We’ve mentioned it before, and I’ll bang this drum anytime I get the chance, but a Bollywood spin-off would be most fitting given that the series is so popular in India. In fact, the series has now featured in the top 10s there for 884 days, which is more than it ever featured in Spain (159 days).
