Yahya Abdul-Mateen II revealed in a recent interview that he exited Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga due to occupational burnout.
While speaking with Josh Horowitz on Happy, Sad, Confused, the Watchmen star shared that he had been constantly working since graduating from Yale School of Drama, juggling multiple projects like The Vanishing of Sidney Hall, Baywatch, and The Handmaid’s Tale, due to which he also had to travel frequently to various places. He added that by 2021, he realized he had become “tired” from all the work.
“Now all of these are….I won’t call them champagne problems. But these are gifts. These are blessings, the entire way,” he clarified. He subsequently recalled how people started viewing him, while he adjusted to the changing world, making him believe he was “some type of commodity.”
Abdul-Mateen II then talked about his initial involvement with Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. He recalled he was in London, having virtual meetings with the director George Miller, whom he said was fully committed to making the film and had begun the process a year before shooting.
The actor said that the experience wasn’t “overwhelming” but was “so cool.” He added that he realized the work was “too much” and that he had to take a break by leaving the movie. Abdul-Mateen II expressed relief at dropping out. He said it allowed him to “recalibrate” and wait and reject acting offers until the right project came along, his Broadway debut: Topdog/Underdog.
Calling it his “dream role,” the actor shared that his performance in it reminded him of his talents. He also said it prepared him for Disney+’s Wonder Man. He expressed gratitude for getting to exit Furiosa to rest and recharge himself, and for how everything ultimately worked out.
