In police slang, such a seizure is called a “rip,” which also gives the movie its title. What should have been a straightforward operation quickly becomes a pressure cooker, as the team must navigate the moral and psychological fallout of discovering so much money in one place.
The Irishman (2019)
The Irishman is adapted from Charles Brandt’s book I Heard You Paint Houses and stars Robert De Niro as Frank Sheeran, Al Pacino as Jimmy Hoffa, and Joe Pesci as Russell Bufalino. The film spans five decades, following Frank’s journey from a WWII veteran and truck driver to a feared mob enforcer deeply entangled in the criminal underworld. Unlike typical gangster films, it’s less about flashy violence and more about the psychological and moral consequences of a life of crime.
Frank Sheeran starts out as a World War II veteran and truck driver in Philadelphia. A chance encounter with Bill Bufalino leads him to Russell Bufalino, the quiet but powerful mob boss who takes Frank under his wing. Frank rises through the ranks to become a trusted enforcer, aka someone who carries out hits.
The narrative then takes a pivotal turn when Frank meets Jimmy Hoffa, the charismatic Teamsters leader. Frank becomes Hoffa’s trusted bodyguard and confidant, and finds himself caught between loyalty to his friend, duty to the mob, and the increasingly dangerous world of organized crime. As decades pass, Frank finds his relationships and decisions tested in ways that are both suspenseful and deeply emotional.
Extraction (2020)
Directed by Sam Hargrave and written by Joe Russo, the 2020 film stars Chris Hemsworth as Tyler Rake, a battle-hardened black ops mercenary with a tragic past. It also features Randeep Hooda, Golshifteh Farahani, David Harbour, and Priyanshu Painyuli.
Based on the 2014 graphic novel Ciudad, Extraction quickly became one of Netflix’s most-watched originals, with nearly 100 million households streaming it in the first month. The film centers around Tyler Rake, a former Australian Special Forces operative now working as a freelance mercenary for the black market. Haunted by the loss of his own son, Tyler’s life is defined by danger, violence, and a search for purpose.
His latest mission takes him to Dhaka, Bangladesh, where he is hired to rescue Ovi Mahajan Jr., the teenage son of a jailed Indian crime lord, Ovi Mahajan Sr. The boy has been kidnapped by a rival criminal faction led by Amir Asif, and Tyler finds the operation anything but straightforward.
The Highwaymen (2019)
Helmed by John Lee Hancock and written by John Fusco, The Highwaymen stars Kevin Costner as Frank Hamer and Woody Harrelson as Maney Gault, two retired Texas Rangers called back into service to track down Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow. The film’s cast is also made up of many other talented actors, such as Kathy Bates, Thomas Mann, Kim Dickens, John Carroll Lynch, and William Sadler.
Unlike many films that romanticize Bonnie and Clyde, The Highwaymen shifts the lens to the hunters. The story is set during the Great Depression. Bonnie and Clyde had become infamous for their string of robberies, murders, and daring escapes. When the crime spree escalates, the Governor of Texas convinces former Rangers Frank Hamer and Maney Gault to come out of retirement.
These men are experienced and are exactly what’s needed to stop the gang. They quickly begin to track Bonnie and Clyde, relying on a mix of old-fashioned investigative work, careful observation, and sheer persistence.
