Nicola Walker fans can expect the celebrated actor to “bring the chaos” to her buzzy new comedy-drama Alice and Steve.

The series imagines a nightmare scenario for Alice (Walker), when her 50-something best friend Steve (Jemaine Clement) suddenly starts dating her 20-something daughter, Izzy (Yali Topol Margalith).
The revelation instantly causes an enormous rift between the two, with Alice making it her mission to end the coupling with a darkly comic gleefulness, which marks a departure from Walker’s more serious earlier roles.
“It’s nice to bring the chaos,” said Walker, in an interview with Radio Times about her character’s outrageous acts of revenge.
“I’ve played a lot of more obviously dramatic parts, but for me, this is very true to real life,” she continued. “I think the way Sophie [Goodhart, series creator] writes is something that I really recognise.
“In real life, you can suddenly behave in extraordinary, extreme ways, because of the emotional situation. So it always seemed very truthful to me, what all of these characters do, which is why I think you go along with them all.”
The actor, also known for such hits as Unforgotten, The Split and Spooks, happily embraced the title of ‘chaos-bringer’ for this lighter project, joking that she could make it her middle name or a superhero alter-ego (see video at top of page).
Goodhart also spoke to Radio Times, detailing why the surprise pairing of Walker and Flight of the Conchords star Jemaine Clement was the right choice for Alice and Steve.

“It was the joy of having someone [like Nicola] who mainly works in drama do comedy, and Jemaine, who does comedy, but has quite a dramatic role in this,” she began.
“I thought that was really interesting because you’re seeing them play slightly different roles than they have in the past, but they are so exceptional together.”
Goodhart added: “The casting just feels really fresh… You can imagine this show with the obvious choices, and you wouldn’t be as instantly engaged.”
Alice and Steve is available on Disney+ from Monday 8 June 2026.
