Director Anil Sharma has spoken about the challenges he faced before making Gadar: Ek Prem Katha as the film marks 25 years since its release.

Anil Sharma dismisses claims of making Gadar for proving relevance as the film marks 25 years, says, “All that matters to me is that audience has seen my film and has liked it”
Sharma recalled that a producer once withdrew a cheque and called him an “irrelevant director” during a difficult phase in his career. He went on to direct Gadar: Ek Prem Katha, starring Sunny Deol and Ameesha Patel, which was released in 2001.
Reflecting on the experience, Sharma said, “I don’t want to prove relevance in front of anyone, till today I don’t, even back then I did not. When someone says such things, I laugh. I’m not hurt by the industry. All that matters to me is that the audience has seen my film and has liked it, nothing else.”
Set against the backdrop of the Partition of India and Pakistan, Gadar: Ek Prem Katha blended romance, patriotism, and human drama. The film went on to achieve wide commercial success and a lasting presence in popular culture.
A sequel, Gadar 2, was subsequently released and performed strongly at the box office, revisiting the franchise more than two decades after the original.
Gadar: Ek Prem Katha was directed by Anil Sharma and starred Sunny Deol and Ameesha Patel. The film was released in 2001.
