The big boys at the back have had to evolve their game in recent years. The days of no-nonsense bruisers has been consigned to the rubbish bin in favour of defenders more accustomed to playing nimble football with the ball at their foot.

Your modern-day defender not only has to stop the ball from going in their net, they also have to dictate play, start attacks and create overloads in midfield. An eye for goal certainly helps too.
As modern managers search for an advantage wherever they can find it, we’ve seen the rise of ball-playing central defenders and inverted full-backs. Technique is just as important as pace and power. A shift toward more direct tactics at the highest level means those at the back are still required to be physical phenoms that remain defensively diligent.
There will be plenty of defensive titans on show at this summer’s World Cup and the best in the business will likely go deep into the tournament.
The different types of defenders that grace the modern game makes creating a list of the world’s best a tricky puzzle to piece together. However, the number of trophies a player has lifted, their current form and key long-term stats help inform our top 10.
RadioTimes.com brings you our definitive list of the 10 best defenders in the world in 2026.

10. Alessandro Bastoni (Inter)

Where better to start than with perhaps the most underrated defender in the global game, Alessandro Bastoni.
A centre-back that oozes class, both in his calm yet assertive defensive style and confidence in possession. The Italian has been a key factor in Inter’s Serie A triumphs and Champions League final appearances in recent years.
9. Pau Cubarsi (Barcelona)
Pau Cubarsi has become a regular fixture on Hansi Flick’s teamsheet at Barcelona – and impressive feat for a 19-year-old! The Spaniard relishes a physical battle and meets the requirements of being comfortable with the ball at his feet.
Cubarsi boasts a pair of La Liga titles on his CV and will hope to help Spain conquer the world in North America this summer. He’s a prospect that’s only likely to climb this list in the years to come.
8. Jules Koundé (Barcelona)

A manager’s dream, Jules Koundé has developed into one of Europe’s most reliable defenders – whether that’s at centre-back or full-back.
The Frenchman is an excellent reader of the game, has the physicality to match up with a striker and pace to keep a winger quiet. He is also hugely influential in the slick passing system Hansi Flick has implemented at the Nou Camp.
7. Antonio Rudiger (Real Madrid)

Antonio Rudiger is a perfect blend of the old and the new. He’s a physical brute with the ability to slam strikers into submission, as well as delicately dance out of the defence with the ball at his feet.
The Germany international has been brilliant since making the move to the Bernabeu – helping to deliver the double in 2023/24 and then proving a bright spot as the team struggled in the 2024/25 campaign. He has slightly slipped down the ratings after an injury-hit term last season, however.
6. Nuno Mendes (PSG)
Portugal’s Nuno Mendes can lay claim to being the best left-back on the planet. A crucial figure in PSG’s domination of Europe, he mixes doing his defensive dirty work with providing a major attacking outlet.
Wingers trying to beat Mendes face a near-impossible challenge due to his rapid speed and it’s frightening to think he’s only 23. There’s plenty more to come and he’s certainly one to watch at this summer’s World Cup.

5. Marquinhos (PSG)

Marquinhos was never the highest-profile name at PSG, but he has been a leader at the back for the star-studded French side for a number of years.
An ultra-reliable figure is all a manager can ask for from his commanding centre-backs. The Brazilian has won more than 20 major trophies for club and country including the last two editions of the Champions League.
4. Virgil van Dijk (Liverpool)

If there’s one defender in world football you’d have picked for your money-is-no-object team over the last 10 years or so, Virgil Van Dijk is your man. The towering Liverpool centre-back was one of the trailblazers of modern defending as the world realised big men at the back didn’t necessarily have to be technically limited players.
The Dutchman was the final piece in the jigsaw for Jurgen Klopp’ Liverpool team that finally won the Premier League in 2020. Champions League, FA Cup and EFL Cup successes also feature on his glittering CV.
3. Gabriel (Arsenal)

One half of Arsenal’s fearsome defensive partnership, Gabriel is an imperious defender who loves a physical duel with the best of them.
The Brazilian boasts plenty of aerial dominance too, at the back and going forward, as he reaps plenty of goals from the Gunners’ revered set-piece routines. A crucial cog in their Premier League success.
2. Achraf Hakimi (PSG)

Achraf Hakimi is the gold standard among full-backs. An attacking asset and diligent defender, the Moroccan has established himself as a leader and key player in the PSG team that were crowned champions of Europe in 2025 and 2026.
Pace, industry, technical quality, and heart, Hakimi has it all in spades and is, quite simply, the complete package.
1. William Saliba (Arsenal)

A Rolls-Royce of a defender, Arsenal star William Saliba has everything you’d look for in a modern centre-back – pace, power, intelligence, ability on the ball and aerial prowess.
The Frenchman is the key cog in the mean defence that Mikel Arteta has built in North London and looks set to play a key role at World Cup 2026 with France.
Who is the best defender in the world?
William Saliba has usurped Premier League rival Virgil van Dijk, whose shown some shaky signs over the last couple of seasons, at the top of our rankings. He may not score as many goals as team-mate Gabriel, but he’s the epitome of a modern-day centre-back.
The Frenchman finally has a major title on his CV after helping Arsenal to the English crown and he will hope to make his mark on the international stage.
The scary thing is that at just 25, Saliba’s best may well be yet to come.
