Captain Scarlet and the Mysterons is set to celebrate its 60th anniversary with a major new exhibition featuring original props, models, toys and memorabilia – and fans of the classic series are being invited to contribute.
The Brighton Toy and Model Museum is partnering with Anderson Entertainment to launch Captain Scarlet 60, a 12-month exhibition opening on Saturday 10 July 2027.
The exhibition will bring together items from collections around the world to explore the enduring impact of Gerry and Sylvia Anderson’s influential science-fiction series.
A selection of rare props, studio-scale models, collectables and merchandise will be placed on display, alongside personal items loaned by some of Captain Scarlet’s well-known admirers.
The exhibition is being co-curated by graphic designer and collector Malcolm Garrett MBE, Brighton Toy and Model Museum trustee and Captain Scarlet enthusiast Steve Crump OBE, and the Anderson Entertainment team, led by Gerry Anderson’s son Jamie Anderson.
Jamie Anderson said the exhibition would demonstrate the influence Captain Scarlet has had far beyond the world of television.
“We’re delighted to be partnering with the Brighton Toy and Model Museum on this exciting exhibition – one which will bring together a raft of Captain Scarlet exhibits, indeed, some of which will surprise fans and visitors alike,” he said.
The exhibition will also illustrate “just how influential Captain Scarlet has been on pop culture, fashion and music like never before,” Anderson added.
Organisers are now asking members of the public to search their cupboards, spare rooms and lofts for Captain Scarlet toys, models and other memorabilia that could potentially be included.
The museum is also keen to hear viewers’ personal memories of watching the programme, whether they were inspired by the female pilots of the Angel fighter squadron or terrified by the unmistakable voice of the Mysterons.
Jan Etches, manager of the Brighton Toy and Model Museum, described the project as a first for the attraction.
“This is a unique opportunity to enjoy the pop culture, aesthetics and imagery of the show,” she said. “With the opening event a year away, work now begins on drawing together the objects that are to be meticulously curated for display.
“We have a raft of materials we want to add to, so are asking the public to get in touch if you have any Captain Scarlet memorabilia, toys or models in a backroom cupboard or a box in the loft.”
The Brighton Toy and Model Museum is housed inside four Victorian cellars beneath Brighton railway station and contains more than 12,000 objects charting the history of British and European toy-making.
Captain Scarlet 60 is intended to offer an accessible and educational experience for visitors of all ages, introducing younger audiences to the programme while giving established fans the chance to see rarely displayed material.
First broadcast in 1967, Captain Scarlet and the Mysterons was created by Gerry and Sylvia Anderson and produced using the puppet-filming technique known as Supermarionation.
Set in 2068, the series followed Spectrum, an international security organisation charged with maintaining peace around the world.
A mission to Mars ended in disaster when Spectrum officer Captain Black mistakenly destroyed a city belonging to the mysterious, non-corporeal Mysterons. Using their ability to recreate matter through a process known as “retro-metabolisation”, the Mysterons rebuilt their city, took control of Captain Black and declared a war of nerves against Earth.
Across 32 half-hour episodes, Captain Scarlet and his Spectrum colleagues attempted to prevent a series of attacks orchestrated by the Mysterons and their newly possessed agent.
Captain Scarlet 60 will open at the Brighton Toy and Model Museum on Saturday 10 July 2027 and run for 12 months – book tickets now.
