Casper the Friendly Ghost is making a return, with a new live-action television series in the works at Disney+.

What do we know about the new Casper live-action TV show?
According to a new report from Deadline, Disney has landed the rights to the new series, which is said to be a “new series take” on the iconic character. The live-action project comes from Rob Letterman and Hilary Winston, who executive produced the Goosebumps projects on Disney+.
Currently, no information about the new Casper series is available yet, but Deadline’s report notes that the show will be a “modern update on the classic ghost story,” and is still in the early stages of development. The show is said to be believed to have a “dark edge” to it, similar to that of the Wednesday Netflix series.
Letterman and Winston are both writing the project, with Letterman set to direct. The pair will also executive produce the project, along with Steven Spielberg, who was also attached to the 1995 movie as an executive producer.
The character of Casper the Friendly Ghost originally appeared in a Famous Studios cartoon released in 1945, as part of a larger series of animated films. The character is a translucent ghost who is known for his personality and friendly nature to living beings.
The character gained more popularity after appearing in 55 more theatrical cartoons from 1945-1959. Throughout the 1960s and 1970s, the character appeared in a number of television series, and then became extremely popular in 1995, when a live-action movie directed by Brad Silberling was released.
