*Warning – contains major spoilers for Criminal Record season 2 episode 8.*

The final episode of Criminal Record season 2 is now available on Apple TV, and it sees Cush Jumbo’s Lenker and Peter Capaldi’s Hegarty foiling the bomb plot – but at a hefty price.
Not only did they have to do a deal with Dustin Demri-Burns’s villainous Cosmo for the targets, meaning they couldn’t go after him for any crimes other than those with a life sentence attached, but Lenker’s partner, Stephen Campbell Moore’s Leo, was subsequently killed in a car bombing.
Following this, Hegarty was seen visiting Cosmo at a theatre, where he had just performed a show to a crowd of his supporters. He told Hegarty that he had heard a fan of his was behind Leo’s killing, but that it had nothing to do with him.
Cosmo was also on his way to have meetings in New York and Colorado, but he said he wouldn’t be reporting back to Hegarty from these – they had done a deal that involved activity in the UK and he would “throw in Germany”, but not the US. He then asked after Luther Ford’s Billy, and clearly still had feelings for him, even after he was betrayed.
Speaking exclusively with Radio Times alongside Jumbo, Capaldi gave his thoughts on this final scene for Cosmo, and what he thinks it means for the character going forward.
“Well, he’s a player, as Hegarty is,” Capaldi said of Cosmo. “The trouble is, the world that they’re living in and that we’re living in, if you’re at that sharp end of it, you have to figure out your way through it. Things change all the time.
“Dustin’s character is going to survive for a long time. He’s self-obsessed. He’s about himself. He’s about propelling himself in the world. And he’ll probably change his whole viewpoint of things, when it suits him. I think he’s going to be around for a long time.”

It’s fair to say there is definitely potential for more seasons of Criminal Record, with things being left on a seriously downbeat note.
Jumbo has told us that she and the team behind the show would “love it” if they got to return for a season 3, “but it’s not up to us!”
