Doctor Who fans have called for Alan Davies to be cast as the next Time Lord.
There’s been no official word on who will be stepping in to replace Ncuti Gatwa as the next Doctor in the hit sci-fi series since the actor’s sudden departure in 2025.
But now viewers have suggested they’d like to see comedian and actor Davies – who’s best known for his role in BBC mystery series Jonathan Creek – taking on the role.
On Tuesday (21 April), the actor posted a photo of a Sun article from 2003 that reported that Davies was being tipped to play the famous Time Lord in Russel T Davies’ revival of the series.
He wrote alongside the post in a caption: “One from the archives, not that long ago really…Christ on a bike. And yes, of course I would have loved to go through time in the Tardis but sadly it was a non-starter.”
One fan commented: “Its 👏 not 👏 too 👏 late.”
Another said: “Still not too late…”, while a third fan said: “Got to say Alan… You would be an amazing Doctor… no question…”

It was announced in October last year that, while Disney will not partner on any future seasons of Doctor Who, the show will still continue on the BBC, with showrunner Davies returning to pen a Christmas special this year.
There’s been much speculation about who could be taking over from Gatwa as the Sixteenth Doctor on the show.
Upon his exit as the Fifteenth Doctor at the end of the last season, the actor regenerated into Billie Piper, who previously played companion Rose Tyler on the show.
But while some assumed this meant the actress will be the Sixteenth Doctor, given she wasn’t actually credited as the Time Lord, others were less convinced.
And while Davies and Piper have both previously spoken out about the star’s return to the Whoniverse, the pair have remained coy about the details of her role.
“It’s an honour and a hoot to welcome her back to the TARDIS, but quite how and why and who is a story yet to be told,” Davies said in a statement following Piper’s return.
Meanwhile, Piper added: “To be given the opportunity to step back on that TARDIS one more time was just something I couldn’t refuse, but who, how, why and when, you’ll just have to wait and see.”
As well as his role in Jonathan Creek, Davies is known for his regular appearances as a panellist on QI.
He has also starred in A Many Splintered Thing, and also had his own radio show, The Alan Davies Show in 1998.
