Dune 3: Oscar Isaac's Return Gets Interesting Answer

Oscar Isaac recently revealed whether he will reprise his role of Paul Atreides‘ father, Duke Leto, in the upcoming Dune 3. Introduced in the first film, he became the target of an assassination plot orchestrated by Baron Harkonnen and Padishah Emperor Shaddam IV. He was later killed while trying to kill the former, with his demise sparking Paul’s vengeful campaign against House Harkonnen.

On Happy, Sad, Confused, Josh Horowitz pointed out to Isaac how Duke Leto Atreides was referenced in subsequent films after Dune, following his death. “Yeah, daddy’s around. Get over it, guys. There’s a lot of other stuff going on right now,” he replied. “Like, giant sandworms. Let it go.”

The Moon Knight star also said he didn’t film any flashback scenes for Dune Part Three. However, he stated that he wasn’t “at liberty to say.” His latter comment vaguely hints at a reprisal of some sort, which is currently unconfirmed.

Despite this, it wouldn’t be out of the realm of possibility for Leto to make an appearance in some capacity, given how Duncan Idaho — who died in the first film — is returning as Hayt, a ghola.

Dune: Part Three premieres in theaters on December 18, 2026. Its date places it in stiff competition with Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Doomsday, also slated to arrive at that time. The Denis Villeneuve directorial, however, has already secured a major advantage over the MCU film by locking in exclusive IMAX screenings for the opening weekend.

Adapting Frank Herbert’s Dune: Messiah, the narrative takes place 17 years after Dune: Part Two. It follows Paul “Muad’Dib” Atreides, now Padishah Emperor, dealing with the consequences of possessing immense power.

In addition to directing, Villeneuve co-wrote the script with Brian K. Vaughan. Furthermore, he co-produced with Cale Boyter, Joseph M. Caracciolo Jr., Brian and Kim Herbert, Tanya Lapointe, Mary Parent, Thomas Tull, and Byron Merritt.

Timothée Chalamet stars as Atreides. He leads a supporting cast that includes Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson, Anya Taylor-Joy, Robert Pattinson, Florence Pugh, Jason Momoa, Javier Bardem, Charlotte Rampling, Isaach de Bankolé, Ida Brooke, and Nakoa-Wolf Momoa.
