A critically acclaimed Godzilla movie is returning to theaters later this year. Beloved by fans and critics alike, the epic kaiju film was a critical darling and a box-office success, grossing over $100 million worldwide.
What Godzilla movie is coming back to theaters next month?
Ahead of the upcoming sequel, AMC Theaters announced that Godzilla Minus One will be returning to theaters this summer on May 22, 2026. This gives viewers not only a chance to witness the acclaimed film on the big screen again, but also to refresh their memory on the silver screen ahead of the movie’s sequel.
Directed by Takashi Yamazaki, Godzilla Minus One is set in Japan just after the Pacific War ended. With no self-defense force and no weapons, the country faces a new threat when a massive monster appears out of the ocean to terrorize the country.
“Japan is already devastated by the war when a new crisis emerges in the form of a giant monster,” the logline reads.
It was announced last year that the breakout 2023 movie is getting a sequel, Godzilla Minus Zero. Set for release in US theaters on November 6, 2026, Yamazaki serves as the sequel’s writer and director, with Godzilla Minus One stars Ryunosuke Kamiki and Minami Hamabe returning to reprise their roles as Kōichi Shikishima and Noriko Ōishi, respectively.
Per the official website, the upcoming sequel will premiere in Japan on November 3, 2026. According to the synopsis, the sequel “picks up in 1949, two years after the tumultuous events of Godzilla Minus One, and continues the story of the Shikishima family as they face an all-new calamity.”
The iconic giant monster wreaks havoc once again when Godzilla Minus One returns to theaters on May 22.
