Fridays are always full of surprises, and June 12 will go down in the history books as the one where Mimoh Chakraborty defeated Diljit Dosanjh, Kangana Ranaut and Manoj Bajpayee. His newest horror film, Haunted 3D has defied all box office logic by opening at Rs. 2.75 crores on Friday, despite not getting a single show in the national multiplex chains.

The industry politics kept the film away from PVRInox and Cinepolis, but the strong audience demand has now resulted in the national chains bowing down to give shows to Vikram Bhatt’s film. Haunted 3D has collected Rs. 2.75 crores from just single screens and non-national chains, which speaks volumes about the business dynamics of the feature film.
The Imtiaz Ali directed Main Vaapas Aaunga starring Diljit Dosanjh, Vedang Raina and Shavari was a non-starter and collected Rs. 1.40 crores on Friday. The film has mammoth costs, and it’s headed to be a disaster at the box office. What’s shocking is that an Imtiaz Ali directorial with Diljit Dosanjh has opened half of a rather low-budget horror film by Vikram Bhatt with Mimoh Chakraborty in the lead.
The Kangana Ranaut led Bharat Bhagya Vidhata is also an absolute disaster, with a start of merely Rs. 1 crore. The fourth release of the week, Governor is also a non-starter with a start around the Rs. 1 crore mark. Both the films have started around 60 per cent lower than Haunted 3D.
It’s a rather shocking Friday, and the exhibitors have found some sort of support from the horror film, besides the Hollywood sagas like Disclosure Day, Backrooms and of course, Obsession.
