Meryl Streep Explains Why She Will Never Write a Memoir

Meryl Streep has a way of saying everything without oversharing. That was on full display when The Devil Wears Prada 2 star sat down with Andy Cohen this week and addressed a question that’s followed her for years. When the talk turned to legacy and the expectation that she chronicle her career in print, Streep didn’t hesitate to explain why she won’t write a memoir.

Meryl Streep recently confronted the enduring question of whether she would ever write a memoir. In addressing it, she defined how she wanted her career to be remembered, through her films, not her words.

The 76-year-old actress joined The Devil Wears Prada 2 co-stars Anne Hathaway, Emily Blunt, and Stanley Tucci on SiriusXM’s Front Row. Hosted by Andy Cohen, the show gave the cast a platform to preview the long-awaited sequel. During the appearance, the Academy Award winner fielded a question on the minds of many book lovers.

“Will we ever get a memoir from you?” Cohen asked Streep. “Nope, nope,” the Julie & Julia star replied without hesitation. Though she has been the subject of several biographies, the veteran actress has never written her own account.

“Okay, and you answer that very quickly,” Cohen pointed out. Streep shot back, saying, “Too boring. Seriously.”

Meryl Streep does, however, enjoy reading memoirs by other celebrities. She read Barbra Streisand’s 2023 memoir My Name Is Barbra and called it fantastic. Streep shared that she listened to the audiobook, saying it was the only way to experience it.

Meryl Streep’s upcoming hyped project is the follow-up to the 2006 hit comedy The Devil Wears Prada. She returns as Miranda Priestly, the icy editor-in-chief of fictional Runway magazine.

Besides the original main cast, the sequel also brings back director David Frankel and screenwriter Aline Brosh McKenna. New cast members include Kenneth Branagh, Lucy Liu, Justin Theroux, B.J. Novak, Pauline Chalamet, Patrick Brammall, Caleb Hearon, Helen J. Shen, and Conrad Ricamora.

The Devil Wears Prada 2 will release on May 1, 2026.
