A new Stranger Things series just scored a season 2 renewal on Netflix days after its premiere, and that’s not the only good news.

Netflix revealed Stranger Things: Tales from ’85 has been renewed for season 2 just five days after the first season premiered on Netflix. That’s super early for a renewal, so you know Netflix is feeling confident after the early viewership metrics have started to trickle in.
It’s starting to look like Netflix has had a much bigger plan in place for Stranger Things: Tales from ’85 from the start, though. In addition to announcing the season 2 renewal, Netflix also confirmed Stranger Things: Tales from ’85 season 2 will be released on Netflix this fall.
You can watch the renewal and release window announcement on Instagram:
This is definitely a bit of a surprise for Stranger Things fans. First of all, Netflix almost never announces renewals this early. It’s also very rare for Netflix to confirm the release window for one of its shows less than one week after the first season premiered. And, it’s even more rare that we see two seasons of a Netflix show in a calendar year.
After waiting more than three years between season 4 and season 5 of Stranger Things, it appears Stranger Things has caught a bit of a break with Tales from ’85.
It makes a lot of sense that Netflix wouldn’t want to wait long between seasons of the Stranger Things animated original series. In the press release, Netflix revealed the series had one of the biggest premieres for an animated series in Netflix history. Plus, when you consider what happened at the end of the first season, there’s momentum to build on this story, which is set between season 2 and season 3 of the original series.
Netflix shared what to expected when the series returns for season 2:
“After uncovering a fearsome mystery at theend of Season 1, Eleven (voiced by Brooklyn Davey Norstedt), Mike (Luca Diaz), Will (Benjamin Plessala), Dustin (Braxton Quinney), Lucas (Elisha “EJ” Williams), Max (Jolie Hoang-Rappaport), andNikki (Odessa A’zion) will take on another perilous threat when new episodes head to Netflix this fall.”
It looks like, based on the press release, Stranger Things: Tales from ’85 season 2 will pick up in the winter of 1985, basically immediately after the first season’s end. I think that’s what most fans would expect. I don’t think a jump to 1986 was on the table, given the show’s title, but it’s possible that we could see more stories set between the events of the original series as time goes on, especially based on this show’s success.
We’ll share more news about Stranger Things: Tales from ’85 season 2 as we learn more. You can watch the first season of the series on Netflix right now, and you should if you’re a fan of the original series! While the characters are not voiced by the stars of Stranger Things, it still feels like the Hawkins gang solving new mysteries.
