Just one month after it debuted on Netflix, The Boroughs, the sci-fi series executive produced by Stranger Things creators The Duffer Brothers, has been cancelled.

The news was first reported by Deadline, with the publication noting that there had been talk about the show returning for more seasons, and that seasons 2 and 3 could have been shot back to back.
According to the report, a season 2 writers’ room had been opened, but this was before the series debuted to lower than expected ratings, sealing its fate.
It’s noted that the show’s budget was high due to an elaborate production with special effects and an all-star cast, which also will have gone into the decision making.

The Boroughs starred Alfred Molina, Geena Davis, Alfre Woodard, Denis O’Hare, Clarke Peters and Bill Pullman, and focused on a retirement community where the residents were forced to band together to stop an otherworldly threat.
The Duffer Brothers have had four shows which have debuted episodes on Netflix this year. There was the Stranger Things finale on New Year’s Day, Something Very Bad is Going to Happen, a limited series which was designed as one and done, The Boroughs and Stranger Things animated spin-off Tales from ’85.
Following this news, Stranger Things: Tales from ’85 will be the only series to continue on the streamer, as the Duffer Brothers shift their focus to Paramount, where they have a new film and TV deal.
