The World Cup is crossing over with The Last of Us in unexpected ways as the global football event has meant that the HBO series has gone on a planned mid-shoot hiatus.

Seeing as the show films in Vancouver, which is one of the host cities of this year’s World Cup, filming has been paused on season 3 for now.
But the good news is not only that production will pick back up after around a month, but also that Peter Sarsgaard has now joined the season 3 cast.
According to Deadline, Sarsgaard is set to take on a completely brand new role in the franchise, playing Seraphite leader Amon. Amon doesn’t feature in the original games on which the HBO series is based, so it’s safe to say that fans will certainly be in for an expectantly surprising turn of events.
Now sole showrunner of the show, Craig Mazin had previously teased that more “information will be coming” about the Washington Liberation Front (WLF) and the Seraphites in season 3.

While both groups were introduced and seen throughout season 2, fans haven’t even really scratched the surface. “No, you haven’t gotten all the information you deserve. Yes, the information will be coming. We did this all by design,” Mazin said.
Seeing as the Seraphites are a religious faction under the guidance of one prophet and have been warring with the WLF over Seattle for almost a decade by the time we meet them in season 2, there’s plenty left to uncover about the enigmatic group.
While we don’t yet know the details of how Sarsgaard’s Amon will slot into things, seeing as he’s a leader then we can anticipate that he would take on a pretty central role.
Sarsgaard is no stranger to a complex role, having starred in films like Orphan, The Batman and The Bride! whilst his TV credits include acclaimed roles in Dopesick, Presumed Innocent and DTF St Louis.
Just a couple of months ago, it was announced that Sinners actress Li Jun Li will be joining the cast of The Last of Us season 3 as Miriam, a Seraphite and the mother of Lev and Yara, according to Variety.

Michelle Mao has also been confirmed to play Yara while Kyriana Kratter will play Lev, a pair of siblings who encounter Abby at a key moment in their lives.
It’s expected that the new season will land on screens sometime in 2027, but fans are obviously waiting on tenterhooks to see just how the new season will unfold, especially as there’s been some major behind-the-scenes shake-ups. Co-creator and co-showrunner Neil Druckmann exited the series after season 2, with Craig Mazin now the solo showrunner.
Mazin said at the time of Druckmann’s exit: “It’s been a creative dream to work with Neil and bring an adaptation of his brilliant work to life on HBO. I couldn’t have asked for a more generous creative partner. As a true fan of Naughty Dog and Neil’s work in video games, I’m beyond excited to play his next game.
“While he focuses on that, I’ll continue to work with our brilliant cast and crew to deliver the show our audience has come to expect. We are so grateful to Neil and Halley Gross for entrusting the incredible story of The Last of Us Part II to us, and we’re just as grateful to the millions of people around the world who tune in.”
