Several cast members were also present, including Paul Blackthorne, Rajendranath Zutshi, Aditya Lakhia, Yashpal Sharma, Akhilendra Mishra, and Dayashankar Pandey. The event provided an opportunity for the team to reconnect and revisit memories from the making of the film.
Sharing glimpses from the gathering on social media, the makers posted a reunion video with the caption, “Aamir Khan and Ashutosh Gowariker reunite with the Lagaan cast after 25 years.”
Released on June 15, 2001, Lagaan was directed by Ashutosh Gowariker and produced by Aamir Khan. Over the years, the film has come to be regarded as one of the most influential and internationally recognized Indian films of its era. Its blend of sports, drama, romance, and social commentary helped it connect with audiences both in India and overseas.
One of the film’s most notable achievements came when it earned a nomination in the Best Foreign Language Film category at the 74th Academy Awards. The recognition made it only the third Indian film at the time to receive an Oscar nomination in the category. In addition, the film won several honours, including National Film Awards and multiple popular accolades.
Set in 1893 during British colonial rule, Lagaan followed the story of villagers burdened by heavy taxation who challenge British officers to a cricket match in an attempt to secure relief from taxes. The unique premise, combined with memorable characters and emotional storytelling, contributed to the film’s widespread popularity.
The film featured an ensemble cast including Aamir Khan, Gracy Singh, Rachel Shelley, Paul Blackthorne, Suhasini Mulay, Kulbhushan Kharbanda, Rajendra Gupta, Raghubir Yadav, Aditya Lakhia, Yashpal Sharma, Amin Hajee, and others.
Another major highlight of Lagaan was its music, composed by A. R. Rahman. Songs such as ‘Ghanan Ghanan’, ‘Mitwa’, ‘Radha Kaise Na Jale’, and ‘O Rey Chhori’ continue to remain popular among audiences even today. As Lagaan completes 25 years, the reunion served as a reminder of the film’s lasting impact on Indian cinema and its place in the country’s cinematic history.
