Netflix subscribers have a limited time to stream Jason Momoa’s acclaimed show before it exits the platform later next month. It was a Sundance TV original that, despite its critical acclaim, was canceled after just two seasons.

The Red Road leaves Netflix in June
The Red Road Seasons 1-2 will be dropped from Netflix’s streaming library on Friday, June 26 (via What’s on Netflix).
The story centers on Sheriff Harold Jensen, who struggles to keep peace between the local communities in the fictional town near New Jersey. His life descends into chaos after a tragic event involving his wife. Desperate to protect his family, Harold forms an unlikely partnership with Phillip Kopus, a dangerous member of the local Ramapo Mountain community.
The show was originally titled The Descendants, then renamed The Red Road. Its cast features Jason Momoa as Phillip, Martin Henderson as Harold, Julianne Nicholson as Jean, Allie Gonino as Rachel, Tamara Tunie as Marie, Kiowa Gordon as Junior, and Annalise Basso as Kate, among others.
Aaron Guzikowski (writer of Prisoners and Raised by Wolves) developed the show for Sundance TV. It was the network’s second show following the incredible success of Rectify.
The Red Road premiered on the network on February 27, 2014, with new episodes airing every week. The show ran for a total of two seasons, with the finale, titled “Shadow Walker,” airing on May 7, 2015. Both seasons were well-paced, thanks to their six-episode run.
Critically, The Red Road received favorable reviews. On Rotten Tomatoes, it boasts an impressive user score of 87%, while the critics’ score sits at 67%. Meanwhile, Metacritic reports a weighted average critics’ score of 66, with a user score of 8.6.
Despite this, Sundance TV canceled the show after just two seasons. Given that it was an abrupt cancellation, the show never received a proper narrative closure. Interestingly, the network also released a graphic novel based on the show, The Red Road 1990: A Graphic Novel, in 2015.
