The fight is about to get bloodier, darker, and far more personal. New Line Cinema is bringing back the brutal world of Mortal Kombat II, and if the latest revelations are anything to go by, fans are in for a spectacle that goes beyond just fatalities and finishers. Set to release across cinemas and IMAX screens in India on May 8, 2026, the sequel raises the stakes as Earthrealm’s champions now joined by the iconic Johnny Cage gear up for an all-out war against the terrifying rule of Shao Kahn.

EXCLUSIVE: Joe Taslim hypes Sub-Zero vs Scorpion in Mortal Kombat II , “This fight will be remembered for a decade!”
At the heart of this chaos is the return of Sub-Zero, aka Bi-Han, played by Joe Taslim. And this time, the character is plunging deeper into darkness than ever before. In an exclusive interaction, Taslim opened up about his evolution in the film, revealing a much more intense and emotionally layered version of the fan-favourite antagonist. “Bi-Han was born in Hell. In Netherrealm. That bright flame from Scorpion at the end of the first movie cast an even darker shadow over him. And in this film, he goes deeper into that darkness. He’s a tortured soul now, an assassin,” he shared.
For Taslim, stepping back into the Mortal Kombat universe isn’t just another role it’s deeply personal. “It’s a big responsibility to play this role because you really want to do your best for all the fans around the world. Probably just like everybody else, I grew up playing the game,” he admitted, instantly striking a chord with longtime fans of the franchise.
And nostalgia is a big part of what makes this instalment special. Taslim fondly recalled the iconic elements that defined the game for an entire generation. “When I hear ‘Mortal Kombat,’ I immediately think of ‘Fatality,’ ‘Friendship,’ ‘Brutality,’ ‘Get over here,’ ‘Sub-Zero wins.’ This time, we’re trying to give justice to the fans it’s a war between realms,” he added.

Directed by Simon McQuoid and written by Jeremy Slater based on the legendary video game created by Ed Boon and John Tobias the sequel promises a more expansive and layered storyline. “Simon and Jeremy really expanded the world and made it more complex, but still faithful to the game. The script is really strong and includes a lot more characters,” Taslim revealed.
And then comes the moment fans have been waiting for. Taslim teased what could easily become one of the most iconic showdowns in the franchise’s cinematic history the clash between Bi-Han and Scorpion, played by Hiroyuki Sanada. “I do think the fight between Bi-Han and Scorpion in Netherrealm is going to be a fight that fans will remember for another decade!” he said, raising expectations sky-high.
The film boasts a massive ensemble cast, including Karl Urban as Johnny Cage, alongside Adeline Rudolph, Jessica McNamee, Josh Lawson, Ludi Lin, Mehcad Brooks, Tati Gabrielle, Lewis Tan, Damon Herriman, Chin Han, and Tadanobu Asano as Lord Raiden.
Backed by Atomic Monster, Broken Road Productions, and Fireside Films, Mortal Kombat II will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures, ensuring a global cinematic rollout. With higher stakes, deeper character arcs, and jaw-dropping battles, Mortal Kombat II isn’t just a sequel it’s shaping up to be a full-blown war for survival. And if Joe Taslim’s words are anything to go by, this is one fight fans won’t forget anytime soon.
