Meryl Streep and David Frankel discuss convincing Lady Gaga to join The Devil Wears Prada 2
In their recent conversation, Meryl Streep and David Frankel shared how Lady Gaga joined The Devil Wears Prada 2. The reporter from Heart asked Streep, “I heard that you actually had to ring her in real life to persuade her.” Emily Blunt was also part of the interview, with the former getting surprised by the question. The Girl on the Train star asked Streep, “Did you? I didn’t know that.”
The Mamma Mia! star replied, “Yeah. That was me. Thank you. You’re welcome.” She further added, “Yes, I did call her. I called her from Islington because I was out to dinner with Tracy. And I thought, you know, I might as well try her.” Soon, the 76-year-old whispered to Blunt how she ended up getting the singer’s number. “I just said, would you do this? Because it’s going to be really good and she said, yeah,” Streep recalled.
On the other hand, Frankel revealed more details about Gaga’s entry to the Back Row. “Aline wrote a pop star into the sequence. You know, they are doing this whole show in Milan, and there’s one line in the script, ‘A pop star does a performance,’” he said. The director continued, “So when we went to talk to the studio about, who should this pop star be? However, the studio felt the movie didn’t need a pop star, but Frankel disagreed.
Thus, the studio found Gaga worthy of the role. “As it happened, almost like in the movie, Meryl had just met Gaga at the SNL 50 show, and they had bonded and said, ‘we should do something together’”. Frankel added, “I got permission from Disney,” and called Meryl to reach out to the singer. The director explained that Gaga was excited about the opportunity and wrote songs for the film.
TDWP2 releases in theatres on May 1, 2026.
