“Survivors survive.” 20th Century Studios has unveiled the first teaser trailer for Whalefall, a must watch new survival thriller coming to theaters this fall. This is the tale of a man swallowed by a whale. But instead of being unrealistic or fantastical (like in the Pinocchio story), it’s an actually realistic and unsettling look at what would happened to someone if this really happened. Adapted from the novel of the same name written by Daniel Kraus. “The odds of being swallowed alive by a whale are not zero.” A scuba diver searching for his father’s remains in the ocean is swallowed by a sperm whale, leaving him an hour to find a way to escape. The hard-earned lessons that his late father imparted may be the key to his escape. Reminds me of other contained survival thrillers like Buried and 127 Hours. Whalefall stars Austin Abrams as the diver eaten by the whale, along with Josh Brolin, Elisabeth Shue, John Ortiz, Jane Levy, and Emily Rudd. This is such an intense teaser! Wow! I am still amazed they actually decided to film this realistically, with all the thrills of Scuba diving and mystery of underwater creatures. How will he ever get out of this predicament?!

Following the death of his father (Josh Brolin), Jay Gardiner (Austin Abrams) goes diving off the central Coast of California in search of his remains, but is swallowed by a massive sperm whale. While trapped inside its belly with only one hour of oxygen left, Jay comes to realize that the hard-earned lessons that his father imparted may be the key to his escape. Whalefall is directed by American writer / filmmaker Brian Duffield, director of the movies Spontaneous and No One Will Save You previously. The screenplay is written by Brian Duffield & Daniel Kraus; adapted from the book of the same name written by Daniel Kraus, first published in 2023. Produced by Brian Grazer, Ron Howard, Brian Duffield, Jeb Brody, and Allan Mandelbaum. 20th Century releases Duffield’s Whalefall movie in theaters nationwide starting on October 16th, 2026 coming up in the fall.
