Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed his condolences on the demise of veteran film producer and former Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) chairman Pahlaj Nihalani, who passed away on June 4, 2026, at the age of 76. In a heartfelt message addressed to Nihalani’s family, the Prime Minister acknowledged his long-standing contribution to Hindi cinema and remembered him as a figure whose work left a lasting impact on the film industry.

Sharing his grief over the veteran producer’s passing, PM Modi wrote, “I received the news of the passing away of Shri Pahlaj Nihalani Ji with a feeling of grief and sadness. His demise is an irreparable loss that cannot be put into words.” The Prime Minister went on to highlight Nihalani’s decades-long journey in the Indian film industry and the role he played in popularizing Hindi cinema. “Shri Pahlaj Nihalani Ji built a notable career in film production spanning several decades. Through his work, he contributed significantly to the growth and popularity of Hindi cinema,” the letter stated.
Apart from his professional achievements, PM Modi also reflected on Nihalani’s role within his family, describing him as a source of strength and encouragement. “For the family, his presence instilled strength and courage to face life’s challenges with confidence. Family, friends and well-wishers will deeply miss him, yet his memory will forever remain in their hearts.”
Concluding his message, the Prime Minister extended his sympathies to the bereaved family. “Please accept my heartfelt condolences. May the family gather the strength and fortitude to endure this grievous loss. Om Shanti!”
Pahlaj Nihalani was a prominent figure in the Indian film industry, known both for his work as a producer and his administrative contributions. Born on January 10, 1950, he served as the chairman of the CBFC under the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting and was also the president of the Association of Pictures and TV Programme Producers for nearly three decades before stepping down in 2009.
Nihalani passed away at Mumbai’s Nanavati Hospital after battling liver cirrhosis for several months. His demise prompted an outpouring of tributes from members of the film fraternity, political leaders and well-wishers, all of whom remembered his contribution to Indian cinema and his years of service to the industry.
His passing marks the end of a significant chapter in the history of Hindi cinema, leaving behind a legacy that continues to be remembered by colleagues and audiences alike.
