It has been reported that six-part thriller series The Girlfriend, which was released on Prime Video, will be getting a follow-up titled The Boyfriend.

The original series starred House of the Dragon‘s Olivia Cooke, House of Cards’s Robin Wright and The Other Bennet Sister‘s Laurie Davidson. It launched in September 2025 and amassed more than 25 million views.
Now, Deadline has reported that Amazon MGM Studios is developing The Boyfriend, which will be an entirely standalone story, with new characters based around themes of masculinity.
Talks are reportedly continuing with writers, and no one is yet officially attached, according to Deadline.
Amazon MGM Studios declined to comment when approached by the publication.

The Girlfriend was based on Michelle Frances’s novel of the same name, with the synopsis saying that it follows Laura (Wright), a woman who seemingly has it all: “a glittering career, a loving husband, and her precious son, Daniel.”
The synopsis continues: “Her perfect life begins to unravel when Daniel brings home Cherry (Cooke), a girlfriend who changes everything. After a tense introduction, Laura becomes convinced Cherry is hiding something. Is she a manipulative social climber, or is Laura just paranoid? The truth is a matter of perspective.”

Explaining why she took her role as Laura, Wright previously told Radio Times magazine: “I loved how female-driven the narrative is, and I could absolutely see how juicy the show could be.
“We were initially looking at other actresses to play Laura, but schedules didn’t work out and I ended up taking the part myself.
“The role resonated for me in so many ways, not least because I have a son [32-year-old actor Hopper Penn, with former husband Sean Penn] and I can understand why Laura feels so protective towards her child.”
The Girlfriend is available to stream on Prime Video. Sign up for Amazon Prime for £8.99 a month.
