Hull City and Middlesbrough face off in the Championship play-off final on Saturday after the EFL expelled Southampton over the ‘Spygate’ saga.
The Saints beat Middlesbrough 2-1 after extra time to reach the play-off final, however, Tonda Eckert’s side have now been kicked out of the competition after admitting to spying on Boro and two other clubs during the Championship season.
Southampton, who had their appeal against their expulsion dismissed, will now miss out on a chance to play for a spot in the Premier League – and a minimum of £110m in TV revenue – with Middlesbrough taking their spot in the play-off final at Wembley.
The Teessiders, who continued to train and prepare for the play-off final despite being knocked out by Southampton, are looking to return to the Premier League for the first time since the 2016/17 campaign.
Hull, who are hoping to join Coventry City and Ipswich Town in being promoted, finished sixth this year but they went on to beat Millwall 2-0 over two legs to book their Wembley place as the Tigers eye Premier League football for the first time since 2017.
