Leah McKendrick’s long-awaited Black List script finally hits Netflix on June 19th—here’s everything you need to know about the cast, plot, and production of your next favorite wrong-number rom-com.

Netflix is gearing up to drop a highly anticipated romantic comedy to its growing library just in time for the summer. The 2019 Black List script Voicemails for Isabelle has been adapted into a new feature film for the streamer, and it’s now been confirmed it will officially premiere globally on June 19th, 2026. Here’s our updated, comprehensive guide to everything you need to know about the movie.

The project has been in the works for quite some time, as we covered when the news first dropped from Netflix in mid-May 2025. It was first officially unveiled back in 2019, albeit not with Netflix attached at the time, with Hailee Steinfeld originally eyed to play the lead role. Back then, Sony carried the project based on a spec script by actress and writer Leah McKendrick, with Sharon Maguire attached to direct. Following that initial announcement, the script was eventually included in the 2019 The Black List, the prestigious annual roundup of the best unproduced scripts.
An early version of the script can still be found online and was reviewed by the brilliant screenwriting resource ScriptShadow, which also interviewed McKendrick following the original sale. After stalling in development, McKendrick moved on to other projects like M.F.A., Scrambled, and the upcoming I Know What You Did Last Summer reboot.
Now, the project has found a permanent home at Netflix. Not only did Leah McKendrick write the feature, but she also stepped up to direct (and even star!). Producing the film are Todd Black, Jason Blumenthal, Becky Sanderman, Steve Tisch, and David Bloomfield under the Escape Artists production banner.

What’s the story of Voicemails for Isabelle?
Here is the expanded synopsis for the upcoming film:
“Jill and her sister Isabelle have always been close, despite Isabelle’s lifelong battle with cystic fibrosis. When Isabelle dies just after Jill’s 29th birthday, Jill is left heartbroken and directionless. Back in LA, where she’s pursuing her dream of becoming a TV writer and finding “a boyfriend for life,” Jill copes by leaving voicemails for Isabelle—funny, raw updates on her chaotic love life. But what Jill doesn’t know is that Isabelle’s number has been reassigned… to Austin, a real estate agent in New York. Amused and intrigued, Austin becomes hooked on Jill’s stories, especially her drama with charming British dating coach Chad. When Chad ghosts her, Austin impulsively flies to LA to meet Jill. They hit it off—but Jill keeps leaving voicemails, not knowing Austin is the one listening. Now Austin must decide whether to tell Jill the truth or risk losing the woman he’s accidentally fallen for.”
Who is starring in Voicemails for Isabelle?
As first revealed by Deadline, the project is being helmed by Zoey Deutch and Nick Robinson, with Deutch leading the charge.
Deutch (best known for Netflix rom-com favorite Set It Up, Zombieland: Double Tap, and The Politician) will play Jill.
Robinson (Love, Simon, Jurassic World, A Teacher) is set to play Wes. (Editor’s note: We previously suspected Robinson might be playing the British dating coach Chad, but he is officially credited as Wes—likely an updated name for the New York real estate agent “Austin” mentioned in the synopsis!)

When was Voicemails for Isabelle filmed?
As we heavily hinted when we dropped our Summer 2025 production start list last year, a new romantic comedy was gearing up for production. Filming for Voicemails for Isabelle primarily took place in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, running from July 10th, 2025, through September 10th, 2025. Some of the filming reportedly took place at Commercial Drive, specifically at the bar and restaurant Havana.
We didn’t get many updates behind the scenes beyond a few stories uploaded by Zoey Deutch:
AsSFGate reported inmid-September, however, the film also moved to San Francisco in California for its final stretch of filming, with that taking place at Fisherman’s Wharf in addition to “other scenic spots like Golden Gate Park, Union Square, and the Palace of Fine Arts.”
When is the Netflix Release Date?
Mark your calendars! Netflix has confirmed that Voicemails for Isabelle will drop globally on Friday, June 19th, 2026. This is the second major movie dated for June, with the other being the new John Cena comedy Little Brother due out on June 26th.
