As it turns out, Heated Rivalry may only have been the beginning of a new golden age of sport-adjacent romantic drama, with Off Campus currently carrying the torch in its absence.

Prime Video’s series shares similarly steamy scenes between its central couple, but generally takes a more light-hearted approach with its romcom-style story (albeit, still addressing some heavy themes along the way).
Both shows have been renewed for season 2, with Heated Rivalry due to start filming later this summer, as Hudson Williams (Shane Hollander) and Connor Storrie (Ilya Rozanov) carve out time in their increasingly busy schedules to return.
In addition, Williams is working on mystery series Yaga (with Carrie-Anne Moss) and MGM thriller Tyrant (with Charlize Theron), while Storrie has booked A24 comedy Peaked (co-starring Emma Mackey, Simone Ashley and Laura Dern).
Their growing status has caused some speculation over how long Heated Rivalry could realistically go on for, with Williams and Storrie reportedly contracted for three seasons in total, at which point they could feel ready to move on.
In any case, the wider Game Changers universe could live on beyond its original leads, with co-star François Arnaud recently voicing his interest in a spin-off for out-and-proud hockey pro Scott Hunter.
Here’s everything we know so far about Heated Rivalry season 2, including the latest comments from showrunner Jacob Tierney and author Rachel Reid.
Heated Rivalry season 2 release date speculation

Heated Rivalry season 2 does not yet have a confirmed release date, but we do know that the hit romantic drama is eyeing a spring 2027 return date.
In February, Canadian streaming platform Crave told The Hollywood Reporter that it was “aiming” for that launch window, which seems achievable as filming on new episodes is due to start this summer.
The following month, it was announced that Heated Rivalry would remain exclusive to Sky Atlantic and NOW for season 2, amid questions brought up by the UK launch of HBO Max, which distributes the show in the US (via Deadline).
We’ll update this page when further details about the Heated Rivalry return date emerge.
Heated Rivalry season 2 cast speculation

Heated Rivalry season 2 will see the return of Hudson Williams and Connor Storrie as besotted ice hockey players Shane Hollander and Ilya Rozanov.
The pair had only minor screen credits to their name prior to the show’s premiere, but quickly became two of the most in-demand stars in Hollywood, following an exhaustive press tour and several high-profile bookings.
François Arnaud and Robbie GK are also expected to feature as secondary couple Scott and Kip, who revealed their love to the world in one of season 1’s most iconic moments.
“We catch Scott and Kip on the very top of the rollercoaster of our storyline, and I think that there’s a whole lot that could be explored after the fact. So I’d like to see some of that,” GK told People, regarding his season 2 hopes.
Other new and returning actors are still to be announced, but we do know one rising star who proved to be a near-miss.
Adults and Big Mistakes star Jack Innanen had started his own social media campaign for a Heated Rivalry role, which proved effective enough to secure a meeting with showrunner Jacob Tierney.
Alas, he has since revealed (via Entertainment Weekly) that production clashes led to those talks falling through. It remains a mystery, then, who could play the other romantic leads from Rachel Reid’s Game Changers novels.
Behind-the-camera, pop star Miley Cyrus recently expressed interest in writing a song for the second season, having recently picked up a Golden Globe nomination for her Avatar: Fire and Ash track Dream as One.
Here’s a reminder of the main cast of Heated Rivalry:
- Hudson Williams as Shane Hollander
- Connor Storrie as Ilya Grigoryevich Rozanov
- François Arnaud as Scott Hunter
- Robbie GK as Christopher ‘Kip’ Grady
- Christina Chang as Yuna Hollander
- Dylan Walsh as David Hollander
- Ksenia Daniela Kharlamova as Svetlana Sergeevna Vetrova
- Callan Potter as Hayden Pike
- Matt Gordon as George Grady
- Sophie Nélisse as Rose Landry
Heated Rivalry season 2 plot speculation: What could happen next?

Heated Rivalry showrunner Jacob Tierney has confirmed that season 2 will be based primarily on The Long Game by author Rachel Reid, her second book about Shane Hollander and Ilya Rozanov.
However, the new episodes will also contain elements of Role Model, which explores the sparks that fly between Ilya’s “grumpy” new teammate, Troy, and their team’s “peppy” social media manager, Harris – casting for both roles is yet to be announced.
There are six books in the Game Changers series of novels, following an anthology format which splits focus between various different gay couples in the world of sport.
At present, Heated Rivalry (adapted in season 1) and The Long Game (season 2) are currently the only novels about Shane and Ilya, but a third entry in their story is expected to be published next summer – hopefully, just in time for a third season of the show.
“I’m so lucky to have a whole world of books here to grab things from, to use, to add colour, to add context, to add story… Heated Rivalry will always be centred around Shane and Ilya, but we have a whole universe here,” Tierney told Deadline in January.

A few months later, he elaborated (via THR): “[The Long Game] really is different. And the challenge of it, from an adaptation point of view, is that you’re in much more serious territory.
“There’s still lots of flirting and lots of sex, but this kind of danger, this kind of hotel-room-adolescent-sex stuff is largely gone. And so it presents really new challenges.”
Tierney added: “What do you do after the rush of danger is gone and now you have to live in a relationship where you still aren’t communicating properly, much as you would like to?
“You can say you love each other, but as adults know, there’s so much more to making a relationship a success.”
The synopsis for The Long Game, which might offer clues about Heated Rivalry season 2 storylines, reads: “Ten years. That’s how long Shane Hollander and Ilya Rozanov have been seeing each other. How long they’ve been keeping their relationship a secret.

“From friends, from family… from the league. If Shane wants to stay at the top of his game, what he and Ilya share has to remain secret. He loves Ilya, but what if going public ruins everything?
“Ilya is sick of secrets. Shane has gotten so good at hiding his feelings, sometimes Ilya questions if they even exist. The closeness, the intimacy, even the risk that would come with being open about their relationship… Ilya wants it all.
“It’s time for them to decide what’s most important—hockey or love. It’s time to make a call.”
That synopsis lines up with what Heated Rivalry star Hudson Williams said he’d like to see from season 2 (via Entertainment Tonight).
“I want to see [Shane and Ilya] in a relationship,” he said. “We see them get into a relationship, but we don’t see them in one. So seeing them deal with s**t that everybody has to deal with would be nice… the real stuff!”

In an interview with Variety, author Reid shared her hopes for the future: “Obviously, the focus has to stay on Ilya and Shane. We’re not going to do season 2 and it’s a totally different couple. It wouldn’t be very popular.
“Not that we weren’t expecting it, but I think we’re all surprised at how popular Scott and Kip were. So now it’s, ‘OK, how do you get more Scott and Kip?'”
On that topic, Scott Hunter star François Arnaud has referenced chatter of a potential spin-off for his character, but admitted that he doesn’t know “what that would look like”.
“I’ve read the books, and in the books Scott buys this sports bar that Kip goes to,” he said. “I did tell Jacob, ‘Can I not just serve pints to your lead characters please? I would like my own…’.”
Arnaud continued: “Jacob’s aware of the positive reaction to Scott’s story and, to me, it’s just a different angle to the main story. It shows the weight that he’s carried on his shoulders… They compliment each other.”
