A couple of Europe’s heavy hitters duke it out when the Netherlands and Sweden meet at the Houston Stadium on Saturday evening.
Sweden, who qualified via UEFA’s play-off route, produced one of the best performances in the opening round of group games as they hammered Tunisia 5-1 to get their World Cup campaign off to a perfect start.
Graham Potter’s star duo of Alexandar Isak and Viktor Gyokeres ran the Tunisian defence ragged and the pair managed to find the back of the net either side of the break. Yasin Ayari also hit a couple of screamers and Mattias Svanberg scored within an instant of coming on as a substitute.
The Netherlands reached the quarter-finals four years ago and have been tipped as dark horses by a number of pundits, although they were held to a 2-2 draw by Japan in their first match in Group F.
Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk and West Ham winger Crysencio Summerville were on target for the Dutch, but Ronald Koeman will need to lift his players from the disappointment of conceding a late equaliser and ensure they get a positive result against Sweden to avoid being under immense pressure in their last group game to progress.
