The Big Bang Theory’s eccentric sci-fi spin-off Stuart Fails to Save the Universe is heading to HBO Max this summer, with a release month confirmed along with a slew of first-look images.
Although only the latest show to spin out of the hit nerdy sitcom, following Young Sheldon and Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage, this entry in the universe stands out for its outright sci-fi premise.
Comic shop owner Stuart (Kevin Sussman) takes centre stage for the first time after he inadvertently brings about a “multiverse armageddon” when he breaks a machine designed by original series leads Leonard (Johnny Galecki) and Sheldon (Jim Parsons).
Despite their characters being explicitly referenced in the synopsis, it has yet to be confirmed whether Galecki and Parsons will be reprising their iconic roles for the series, or if they will simply be referred to from off-screen.
We do know, however, that alternate versions of The Big Bang Theory characters will be seen as Stuart takes a journey across the multiverse, with girlfriend Denise (Lauren Lapkus), pal Bert (Brian Posehn) and frenemy Barry (John Ross Bowie) in tow.
If you’re as intrigued as we are to find out what all this means for the future of The Big Bang Theory franchise, the good news is that we don’t have much longer to wait! Stuart Fails to Save the Universe will premiere on HBO Max in July 2026.

Now that HBO Max is finally up and running here in the UK, it’s likely that the show will launch simultaneously here and across the pond on the shiny new streaming platform.
An intriguing first-look image from the series show the core characters in what could be a post-apocalyptic universe (see top of page), donning dark colours next to a metal vehicle as they receive some worrying information.
Another image of the ensemble sees them look ahead in fright at an unseen presence, holding a giant mechanical device which is presumably the cause of their imminent adventure.
Another image shows off a completely different location, with Stuart and Denise sharing a moment alone by a shimmering blue lake in the middle of a forest. The characters met, and eventually married, in the original Big Bang Theory series.
Lapkus went on to play the title character in Netflix comedy The Wrong Missy as well as the voice role of Jennifer Sh’reyan in Star Trek: Lower Decks. Sussman has recently appeared in acclaimed miniseries The Dropout and Lessons in Chemistry.
The synopsis for Stuart Fails to Save the Universe teases, as the title suggests, that things “don’t go well” as the hapless group traverses the multiverse – and certainly, in the image above, Stuart and Denise do seem to be grappling with a dilemma.
The bold new direction for The Big Bang Theory comes from original series creators Chuck Lorre and Bill Prady, plus screenwriter Zak Penn, whose work includes Marvel blockbusters X2 and The Avengers, plus sci-fi hits Ready Player One and Free Guy.
